The goal for my project is to encourage and support students to achieve their reading and writing goals by providing them with enriching learning materials.
Teachers at Dover Elementary strive to create engaging learning environments where students are self-motivated to attain their goals.
This project will help me fill the learning gaps that exist in my classroom. I have a very diverse classroom which includes migrant students and ESE students. Many of these students are reading below grade level.
Materials requested for my grant will be used during my reading skills-block on a daily basis throughout the school year. Students will be rotating through the skills rotations, which include reading fluency, accountable independent reading, word work and writing as I work with small skills-based groups. As students rotate through the skills-based stations, they will be able to listen to stories, sit on a comfortable seat to read, work with a partner on their reading comprehension skills,
Students will show a year's growth in reading.
Twenty students this year will benefit; however, I plan be teaching for another 15 years so over 300 students will benefit.
The daily language practice journals are consumable. All other items are not consumable so they will last for years to come for future students.
1. The stools will be alternative seating for students to sit on in the reading area of the classroom.
2 and 3. The roll and read blends and digraphs, as well as the roll and read vowels phonics games will be used by students during word work independent rotations.
4. The building fluency card bank will support students' fluency development. They may read these independently or to a partner at a "just right" speed with accuracy and expression.
5. The fluency and comprehension partner scripts will be used for students to self-check their reading comprehension skills as they read scripts and then ask their partner various questions about what they read. It will also reinforce the strategy of looking back at the text for text evidence or even for the answer.
6, 7, 8, and 10. All of these items will be used in a listening station in the classroom. Students need to hear what reading fluently sounds like. This listening center will also help students who are reading below grade-level, have access to grade-level texts while working independently.
9. The table top writing center will create an inviting writing area in the classroom where students are able to access their own supplies for writing.
11. The tricky words and phrases teaching cards will be used in small groups or whole group. Many students at my school struggle with idioms, multiple meaning words and vocabulary. By having these cards on hand, I will be able to give students examples and we can have a discussion before diving into a text where these things appear.
12. The sound phones will be used by students who are reading independently. Students will whisper read into the sound phone which will enable them to hear themselves.
13. The daily language practice journals will be used in the mornings as a review or introduction, depending on the words, of vocabulary. Many students at my school need more support writing complete sentences.
