Project Goal

Seminole Elementary is a Leader in Me school that utilizes the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey to instill the traits of effective and intentional living in our student’s academic and personal lives.

The funds from this grant will be used exclusively to purchase Leader in Me student consumable materials that will facilitate the daily implementation of the Leader in Me program.

How Project Benefits Students

The essence of the Leader in Me program is found within the “7 Habits”: Be Proactive; Begin with the End in Mind; Put First Things First; Think Win-Win; Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood; Synergize and Sharpen the Saw. As students engage with the habits and the language associated with them, they learn to regulate and direct their own thinking and feelings toward more positive personal and academic outcomes. They also learn to live, work and play in the context of a supportive and interdependent community.

The Leader in Me program is a long-term investment in the lives of our students, families and staff. By integrating this mindset and curriculum into our daily practice, we will be empowering our students to take ownership of their own learning and ultimately, of their own lives.

The Leader in Me is implemented concurrently through three separate but interrelated components: Leadership, Culture, and Academics. Leadership principles are taught to the students through engaging mini-lessons and modeled daily by staff. A culture of leadership is developed through engaging students in active leadership roles in their classrooms and at the school building level. Student academic skills are enhanced through teaching the students how to set high, but realistic goals, how to plan for success and how to monitor their own learning. These skills and abilities taken together instill hope in students of all ages, because they give the students a sense of agency and determination that they are capable and they have what it takes to overcome the barriers and obstacles that life presents and to also recognize and move forward on the opportunities that are present.

Expected Outcome(s)

All of our K-5 students will be impacted by the implementation of the Leader in Me program. The HEF Grant, if awarded, will provide these students with the daily print materials that reinforce the leadership concepts being taught, discussed and lived out in each classroom. Ultimately, we hope to see all of our students taking charge of their lives as evidenced through improved behavior, academics and school culture. These factors will be measured annually by the Leader in Me (MRA) Measurable Results Assessment. This survey will be delivered in the spring of 2021 to these stakeholders: All 4th and 5th grade students, parents and staff. The results of this survey will be used to fine tune our implementation of the Leader in Me program and its impact on our overall school community.
