The goal of this project is to provide gifted students rigorous and engaging material. With this curriculum we will be able to dive deeper into the ELA standards through an inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analyses of texts.
This project will benefit students in multiple grade levels this school year as well as future ones. The units in Jacob's Ladder are designed to enhance reading comprehension. Tasks have been organized with questions and activities to cultivate higher order, critical thinking skills. Ladder rungs are organized to increase depth and complexity in intellectual demand.
The 3 skill ladders are listed below with their corresponding skills.
Ladder A:
Sequencing, Cause and Effect, Consequences and Implications
Ladder B:
Details, Classification, Generalization
Ladder C:
Elements, Inference, Theme/Concept
Gifted Goals Addressed:
Student Outcomes Program Goal 1:
By graduation, the student identified as gifted will be able to critically examine the complexity of knowledge: the location, definition, and organization of a variety of fields of knowledge.
Student Outcome Program Goal 2:
By graduation, the student identified as gifted will be able to create, adapt, and assess multifaceted questions in a variety of fields/disciplines.
Student Outcome program Goal 4:

This ongoing project will provide gifted students a unique opportunity to enhance reading comprehension and critical thinking skills with a variety of text types including literature, poetry, science, social studies, and social emotional topics. High ability learners will move through and inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analyses.
In addition, this project will allow me to serve the students and target their interests as well as areas of strength ranging from communication, creativity, collaboration, science, social studies, culture, critical thinking, and reading while fostering their love of learning through discovery and inquiry.
Using the scaffold skill ladders connected to poetry, essays, short stories, and non-fiction, students move from basic understanding to higher order, critical thinking and question skills. This resource can also be easily adapted to other grade levels to reach more students.
Because this resource is reusable, this project will continue to benefit students for years to come.
This field -tested method was developed by the Center for Gifted Education and William & Mary with Title 1 students to improve reading comprehension, increase critical thinking, an enhance overall interest in reading.
William & Mary also offer free professional development webinars for the implementation of this resource.
