How Project Benefits Students

STEM education is a great way to encourage critical thinking skills as well as literacy in science. In order to encourage STEM for my sixth grade science students a Vex Super Kit contains a self directed opportunity for students to create their own robot. Innovation is also a key component to STEM education. They could become the next NASA scientist working on Rover! Robotics are very much a part of space exploration. In class, I have students create posters & models that consist of the Earth's interior in addition to projects that involve the matter/make-up of the Earth. To show students examples & perspectives of how things change over time in space this book will provide my students an astronaut's perspective as viewed from the space station.
Having the use of robotics will help me reinforce 6th grade standards (Example SC.8.E.5.10). Assessing how technology is essential to science for such purposes as access to outer space and other remote locations, sample collection, measurement, data collection and storage, computation, and communication of information.

Expected Outcome(s)

Robotics is an elective here at our middle school so showing students the benefits of robotics cross curricular benefits their overall grade across classes. There are not enough engineers choosing STEM careers across the global landscape. Receiving the "hands on" experience will encourage a love of STEM. Having a printer in the classroom allows students to print out research notes as well as pictures for projects. Research is a big component of science and printing up reliable scientific sources is important.
