The goal of this project is to make the e-learning experience for 5 high school seniors learning German as engaging and meaningful as possible through the purchase of online textbook access codes. These 12th graders have been dedicated to becoming fluent in German since they arrived at Alonso High School four years ago; they have excelled in their German 1, 2, and 3 course and are now working on the AP German Language and Culture course from the College Board, but they are working without an online book. In the classroom, we also only have two paper copies of the book for five students. The Covid-19 protocols do not allow them to share those hard copies of the book either.
All five of the AP seniors are learning from home due to the pandemic and do not have daily live lessons with their instructor. We have Zoom sessions Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays where they have opportunity to speak, listen, read, and write like they would in a classroom, but there are sometimes connectivity issues that reduce the quality of the language they are hearing and working with authentic sources through Zoom is cumbersome. In order to best develop their fluency in German and skills tested by the College Board in May, the students need access to the online textbook Supersite, Neue Blickwinkel (New Perspectives). The textbook supersite has thorough and interesting chapters that are full of modern video clips, high-quality audio recordings, and interactive exercises that the students can do on their own schedules. This online addition to their live Zoom sessions with their teacher would improve their e-learning experience dramatically. They really need access to correct, spoken German at their own pace with exercises to prove they understood the material from home. By selecting this elective course again, the students have shown they are committed to hard work, and these access codes would give them the tools they need to be successful and confident.
All five of the students would be able to access their textbook integrated into Canvas all year. They would work on listening, reading, writing, speaking, and cultural connections with the intermediate high to advanced low proficiency in German. They would be prepared to take the AP German Language and Culture exam in May that includes a variety of tasks like: speaking to a friend, giving a formal presentation aloud, writing an essay with multiple sources, writing an email, and interpreting a variety of written and spoken sources with multiple choice questions.
The items needed for this project are 5 student access codes to Neue Blickwinkel from Wayside and 1 teacher access code to manage the students' progress. This program helps students develop an intermediate high to advanced low skill level in German.
