Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

MLK had a dream. What is your dream? I have many and one of them is to have a display of books for February African American History Month that represents the topic in many different ways. I would like to display books written by African-American authors, books which have African-Americans on the cover and titles on famous African-American men and women who left their mark on history. Last but not least, it is a good mixture of fiction and non-fiction. I will pull titles from our collection as well as offer these new titles on the display and later on our shelves.

The books relate to many standards used in 6-8 grade, including LAFS.68.RH.2.4 -
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.
Students come to the media center to study African American History in a social context.

Project Goal

MLK had a dream. What is your dream? I have many and one of them is to have a display of books for February African American History Month that represents the topic in many different ways. How Project Benefits Students

Words have power! So many African Americans have played a vital role in American history.

I would like my students to have a world of art open up to them as they explore work by artists like Spike Lee and Elizabeth Catlett, among many other. I have a list of so many prominent African American men and women because it is hard to choose just a few. Each has changed American history in a different way. The Media Center will have books featuring authors like Jason Reynolds, Kwame Alexander and other prominent African American authors for juvenile titles. In my list I have books for everyday life such as cooking. My hope is that the display inspires increased circulation of African American authors and/or books that feature African Americans.

Expected Outcome(s)

The media center supports all teachers that have students working on specific projects. Some teachers do projects for African American History Month and these books will serve us well for that month and years to come. The media center also supports teachers working on biographies and other topics unrelated to African American History Month but the titles support those units as well. These titles will come in handy for so many occasions!

Detailed Cost Summary

The literature has depth that covers an awesome display for African American History Month.

All books are from Follett and will have the library marking needed for checkout.
