Project Goal

Title 1 6th grader students are reading the Percy Jackson Lightning Thief book to enhance their reading and writing skills while integrating the arts (art project, theater script or sets, write a song or graphic novel, or perform a dance).

How Project Benefits Students

As an arts magnet school, we strive to integrate the arts into core subjects which enhances basic reading and writing skills in a fun, interactive, and creative way. The current books are in terrible condition and the classroom is limited in art supplies. By integrating the arts into their reading and writing, students will be motivated, inspired and challenged. This is one of the longer books most students have read and it will be a challenge to maintain focus and motivation to complete it. By allowing free choice of their final project, they will be more motivated and have more ownership in the quality of their final project. This will benefit students for the next 3-4 years.

Expected Outcome(s)

120 students will read the book and use their interactive notebooks to practice their reading strategies, writing strategies and thinking skills. The culminating project will summarize all their reading and writing exercises into an art project that summarizes and synthesizes their interpretation of The Lightning Thief. Their art project will organize, and assimilate all their previous reading and writing exercises in their journals. Their final creative project can integrate their art classes such as theatre, art, music, and dance. Projects can include writing a script, designing a theatre set for a scene, costume design, writing a song, choreographing a dance, or creating an art piece.
