Project Goal

My goal is to increase overall reading comprehension, engagement, and retention for reluctant readers by offering them flexible seating, choice in reading materials for both the classroom and for the home, and materials that are culturally relevant. According to Read Theory data, our sixth grade population is comprehending at a third grade reading level. Our overall goal is for our students to become lifelong learners through reading, and by offering a variety of reading materials students will be inclined to participate.

How Project Benefits Students

Students have lost valuable instructional time, and by offering them this unique opportunity, we can ensure that the achievement gap closes at a quicker pace. We are a Title I Renaissance School with 91% of our students on Free or Reduced Lunch. Many of our students do not have the resources or support. Therefore this grant is necessary to ensure success in and out of school by providing books for the classroom and the home to engage with reading.

Expected Outcome(s)

By offering students these books, our goal is for students to want to read and for them to want to read beyond the classroom. Students will see themselves represented in the literature of our classroom, and this cultural relevancy will fuel further reading engagement both in and out of the classroom. This in turn will bolster students' reading comprehension, skills, and love for literature.
