Hillsborough Education Foundation - $338.00
To increase academic language skills in our language impaired students, students at risk for language impairment, and bilingual language impaired students.
At Mendenhall Elementary we have almost 50 students classified as having a language impairment. This means they have difficulty in many language areas such as structure, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral output. Having a research backed program for language available at the school for the speech language pathologist to implement in therapy to systemically target crucial language skills is imperative. The Story Champs program promotes language development for preschool and school aged children. The curriculum is also available in English and bilingual English/Spanish, as well as virtual lessons. The curriculum supports numerous Standards, such as Special Skills PK12 Semantics, Syntax, as well as strengthening academic language through story telling to target ELA BEST Standards in Vocabulary and Communicating Orally for each grade level. Story Champs includes child relevant stories that challenge students to recall and share information, acquire word meaning through context, expand knowledge, and comprehend.
Expected outcomes include improvement in the functional and academic language skills and IEP goals of children with language impairments. Improvement in vocabulary, comprehension, and oral output.
The kit includes English and Spanish translated story books, printed illustration cards, story starter cards, story games, flash drive with extra activities and a digital presentation for virtual therapy. Take home printable versions are also included for work at home.
