This project will engage students in arts-based and place-based learning with the Rose Hill Cemetery Place -based Learning Program. Students will learn the history of the Rose Hill Cemetery and create art-based memorial stones for unmarked graves at this historic cemetery.
This project will benefit students in several ways. First, this project aims to blend arts-based and placed-based learning to allow students to explore and engage in local African American history. Second, this project will engage students in critical historic analysis of local African American history. Third, this project will allow students apply history lessons to civic engagement in their local community.
Students will:
1) understand historic processes that shaped the landscape of the Rose Hill Cemetery
2) Work with local anthropologists to discover how unknown graves are discovered
3) Create art-based memorials for unmarked graves at Rose Hill Cemetery
This project will be featured on the Rose Hill Cemetery Project website - www.rosehillcemeteryproject.com.
Items requested for this project allow students to create concrete memorial plaques for unknown graves at the Rose Hill Cemetery.
