My goal with this request is in two parts:
1.) I would like to provide a clear understanding of the process of milling lumber so that students can see all layers of the construction industry. I believe it is important to understand all aspects of an industry so that you as a trades worker can perform your task completely.
2.) This machine would provide our carpentry program a chance to utilize material donated as we cannot afford materials from our approved vendors due to low funding ratios/rates.
The majority of our lumber is donated from local lumber yards and is in rough form which requires a jointer to machine. This machine will provide an opportunity for my students to understand the process of milling lumber from the natural state right off the tree farm to a perfectly rectangular prism of wood.
This process is part of our curriculum and is the initial step in a four step process of milling lumber. This process will be practiced daily and will be an ongoing sequence throughout each school year as students continue to design and build projects.
Our carpentry program allows students to pursue a NCCER certification in carpentry that is recognized at local apprenticeship programs and nationally in terms of employment. I feel that this machine will provide students with the motivation to work with their hands and actively study for the certification process.
