Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

My students in the speech and language program need to increase their communication skills in order to be effective communicators in the school setting. Students with language impairments exhibit decreased vocabulary and grammar skills, which impact their academic learning. Students with speech impairments have difficulty producing speech sounds, which impede their ability to read, sound out words, and be understood by others. My goal is to help the speech and language impaired students improve vocabulary, grammar, articulation, and overall language and communication skills. Improvement in these skills will positively influence their ability to access all aspects of their education and will allow them to be more successful learners.

My goal is to improve my students' speech and language skills through the use of miniature objects. Students, including preschoolers through fifth graders, love using miniature objects as they make learning more fun and engaging! The items in the kit provide high-quality, miniature, and realistic-looking objects. Students can hold, sort, and manipulate these items while increasing their vocabulary, language, and speech skills.

How Project Benefits Students

Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus and promotes meaningful learning experiences. This language kit provides a hands-on way to work on categorization and sorting skills. In addition, students can work on describing the objects as well as articulation while they accurately name the items using correct speech sounds.

This kit of miniature items allows students the opportunity to identify/produce animal sounds, match objects to photographs, identify/label objects, understand/use prepositions, learn functions, acquire attributes, follow single and multi-step directions, respond to yes/no questions, answer wh-questions, categorize objects, compare and contrast objects, and more. The sorting mail boxes and treasure chests will give the students an additional and exciting way to sort the objects. These miniature objects provide multiple opportunities for language learning and students can work together in groups or individually using the objects throughout the school year. Categories of items in this kit include: sports, wild animals, musical instruments, vehicles, insects, fruits and vegetables, farm animals, tools, flowers, dinosaurs, and people/occupations.

Expected Outcome(s)

This miniature object kit will provide engaging and hands on learning opportunities to increase students' speech and language skills for multiple students for years to come! It is expected that through the use of these hands on manipulatives, students will be engaged and eager to practice their speech and language skills. These tools will allow a caseload of around 100 speech and language impaired students to make significant progress toward their communication goals as documented on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
