Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Hillsborough Education Foundation - $1,947.29
My goal is to provide a rich, high interest, literature based curriculum for all subjects (Reading, Math!!, Science, and Social Studies) for my K-5 gifted students.
Right now there is very little provided for Gifted students in the way of materials. I am a newer gifted teacher and do not have a lot of resources for my gifted program. I hope to use this grant to purchase materials for my students to make sure they have access to the highest quality curriculum options. My goal this year, as stated above, is to focus on a literature based program.
In the school I work in, most students speak two or more languages. They excel in language based subjects! They need to be challenged. Providing them the opportunity to read diverse high quality literature, as provided in this program, I can push them harder and farther to achieve more. One thing I know my students will like is the choice in their work, each lesson includes several different ways to show mastery (which is so important for gifted kiddos), and every unit also includes a hands on project at the end (again, super important for gifted kiddos!) I like that they may be reading a fictional story about the Andes in reading, studying the geography of South America in Social Studies, and learning about different types of rocks in science, and learning about distance or area of 3d shapes in math. Everything is linked unit by unit. It makes such a big difference in retention of learning when you do not learn something in isolation. We will dive deep and the students will build real understanding of each topic. I am so excited to be able to provide this opportunity to my students!
Thank you for considering my classroom and my students! This grant will impact my students for years and years to come. Thank you! :-)

What Will Your 9-Year-Old Do This Year?
Will they read... eleven novels and a book of Native American short stories; nine books that explore the geography, culture, and traditional stories from other lands; five books related to the early history of the Americas and the US Government; five books that investigate rocks and minerals, electricity, animal adaptations, and force and motion; and five books that explore place value, fractions, and geometry?
Will they complete 12 major writing assignments that include...
personal letters, business letters, speeches, descriptive paragraphs, persuasive arguments, short stories, newspaper articles, poetry, and a book chapter?
Will they experiment with... different types of soil while varying plant growing conditions, outdoor composting techniques, ecosystems made in jars, magnets and magnetic fields and shields, electric conductors and insulators, batteries and motors,
friction and forces, a balloon rocket, the properties of rocks, shortening and ice water to appreciate the adaptations of polar bears to their environment, and simple machines like wedges, planes, screws, and pulleys to make work easier?
Will they make... memories square dancing with her friends,
a pioneer dinner for your family, airplane wings to demonstrate lift, a quilt with squares from countries all over Asia, a nutcracker from a European country, a fraction and a decimal board game, a map of an imaginary geometry town, a compass with a sewing needle and a piece of cork, and a world explorers card game?
They will do all this and more if they use the Age 8-10 level this year.
Increased engagement in students means more learning is happening, and more retention. I don't want to just "cover" a bunch of "stuff" with my students. I want to provide my students the opportunity to dive deep and make real meaning and understanding happen, with fun engaging, books and projects.
Every unit has a hands on project, every subject is literature based (even math) and everything connects! This means the students are building a huge knowledge foundation that acts a s a bridge from one subject to the next. That is where true learning happens! :-)
