Project Goal

The goal is for students to become excited about math, enjoy math learning, and to have a deeper understanding of math concepts so they will be able to apply their knowledge to future learning.

How Project Benefits Students

Through this grant, students will have more opportunities for hands-on learning to practice what they are learning, and to review what they have learned, throughout the year. Literacy will also be tied into math learning through engaging teacher read alouds related to math skills being taught in the classroom.

The materials purchased through this grant will be used for many following years, impacting hundreds of students. The materials purchased will be divided among our five second-grade classrooms so every classroom has the same available resources. The materials being purchased tie in with the second grade math curriculum. The materials will engage students in addition, subtraction, measurement, time, and geometry standards.

Expected Outcome(s)

This is a grade-level grant for five second-grade classrooms. We average about 20 students per classroom so this grant will impact about 100 students this upcoming school year. The materials are not consumable so they will be used in many years to come, meaning this grant will impact hundreds of students.

Students will be explicitly taught how to use the materials in this grant, which includes explaining their thinking, to maximize understanding of the standard being taught or reviewed. The expected outcome is for students to have a deeper understanding of the math standards, an excitement for math and a greater desire to be engaged in mathematical learning. My desire is for all, or most, students to be on grade-level by the end of the school year, and every student not on grade level to move up at least one grade level by the end of the school year.
