My goal is to provide opportunities for students to engage in critical thinking lessons. As a Reading Resource teacher, I will be supporting approximately 75 students in kindergarten through 5th grade in a small group setting. This resource will have the most impact on grades 2-5. My goal is to provide lessons to move students from lower order, concrete-thinking skills to higher order critical thinking skills to grow deep readers and thinkers.
Jacob's Ladder is a reading comprehension program comprised of lessons that scaffold student learning and promote inquiry-based discussion of text. The lessons push students to agree and disagree with each other and to justify their answers using evidence from the text through discussion. The tasks move from basic reading comprehension skills to critical reading behaviors. The text genres are varied and expose students to poetry, myths/fables and nonfiction text. There is also a social and emotional connection in the texts that have students apply themes, real-life experiences and lessons from texts to their lives. These are just a few benefits that will enhance student learning through critical thinking.
Students will be able to engage in deep meaningful text and discussion. This will have an impact on approximately 75 students at Trapnell Elementary. Once I implement the program with small groups, I plan to share with K-5 teachers the benefits of planning critical thinking opportunities into daily lessons for all students. This will get kids excited about and talking more about reading, while pushing them to be critical thinkers when they read. BEST standards alignment will be present in the lessons to further enhance higher order, critical thinking skills.
