Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

As a math coach in a Title 1 school where 86% of our students are economically disadvantaged, I want to implement strategies and materials to help bring equity in learning to all students. Regardless of their race or economic status, I want to foster confidence in every student. I want them to feel strong in their mathematical abilities while they are learning and having fun. The research shows that I will be able to accomplish this goal by using vertical math groups to build thinking in the classroom which in turn will increase our mathematical success for all students!

Project Goal

As a math coach in a Title 1 school where 86% of our students are economically disadvantaged, I want to implement strategies and materials to help bring equity in learning to all students. Regardless of their race or economic status, I want to foster confidence in every student. I want them to feel strong in their mathematical abilities while they are learning and having fun. The research shows that I will be able to accomplish this goal by using vertical math groups to build thinking in the classroom which in turn will increase our mathematical success for all students!

How Project Benefits Students

In Peter Liljedahl's book, "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics," he emphasizes 14 practices to increase thinking in the math classroom, in turn increasing engagement. According to Liljedahl, "A thinking student is an engaged student."

Mr. Liljedahl spent 15 years studying classrooms in an attempt to improve the thinking that went on in the math classroom. One of his conclusions was to get students engaged by having students work in groups on a vertical surface. This simple change was highly effective in increasing the engagement of every student.

I would love to provide the teachers in my school with the resources to transform their classrooms into a place where thinking can occur, where students are engaged in their learning and provided with opportunities to problem solve together as well as to share and compare their thinking. By purchasing the Math in Practice Series and classroom resources to create "thinking classrooms", I will be able to work with the teachers in my school to bring this effective teaching and math success into their classrooms.

Expected Outcome(s)

The overall outcome of this grant is to build thinking classrooms where students become independent problem solvers. I hope to accomplish this by also increasing student thinking, engagement, and discussion. Through effective strategies and teaching, I also hope to see improved student performance and test scores.

Detailed Cost Summary
