Each year in 4th grade I try to help students learn social and emotional skills to help them deal with their friends, life situations they may face, and their future. These books help students understand their feelings as well as give them ways to deal with situations and feelings that are often overwhelming.
The hope is of using these books with my 4th graders to prepare and help them deal with a lot of very big emotions and problems they face. I am at a Title 1 school and may of my students do not have the resources or examples at home to help them navigate through their complex emotions. They all benefit from having someone there to listen and to also have examples of what to do if they are feeling certain emotions but are overwhelmed by them.
The over all goal is to help students not only recognize what emotions they are feeling, but to also give them ideas of what to do with those emotions. This will help them develop life skills and also help them navigate a world that is ever changing.
