Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal of this project is to support our PBIS school store and events. PBIS is an acronym for Positive Behavior Intervention Support. Miles is a transformation school that uses PBIS to help motivate the students to learn. Many of our students struggle with motivation to work on their academics. Negative behaviors can arise from students as they struggle with academics. PBIS helps to reinforce positive behaviors by using a token economy. We use Miles Mustang money to support positive behaviors and academic achievements. Teachers and staff are able to give students Miles Mustang money when the students are on task and/or showing positive behavior. Our teachers use the Mustang Money to incentivize students to read. The students can receive a set amount of mustang money for each book or chapter they complete. Students can use the Mustang Money at the school store or school wide events. Students are able to come to the school store twice a month to purchase items with their Mustang Money. Students are also able to use the money for school wide events that are held monthly. Students are able to purchase the event tickets at the store for a set amount.

How Project Benefits Students

The PBIS treasure box project benefits students by incentivizing them to work hard on their academics as well as make positive behavior choices. Students love the school store and events. Teachers enjoy using the token economy with their students as it increases academic motivation and positive behaviors. It has been a challenge to keep the school store stocked with items that the students love and want to work for. Our students love edibles that include items like Takis and sour patch kids. Our first PBIS event was held on October 30th. This particular PBIS event was teacher led. Each grade level chose an activity for their grade level as well as the price of the classroom ticket. Each class had to work together to earn a class ticket to be able to enjoy the activity together. It was amazing to see the classrooms work so hard together as a team to earn the class ticket. We look forward to more events with our students. Our PBIS team would like to offer larger, more expensive items in the store for the students to save their money for a larger item. We do not get a lot of larger, big ticket items in our store through donations so it will be fun to be able to offer the students items they wouldn’t normally be able to purchase at our Mustang Store.

Expected Outcome(s)

The expected outcome of this project is to increase positive behaviors and academic motivation. We would like to see a decrease in behavior trackers and office discipline referrals as well. Our desired outcome from this project is for our students to achieve their highest academic and behavioral success.

As of last school year we have a D school letter grade. We need to have a 50-point gain to reach a C letter grade. Our short-term goal is to achieve a C letter grade as a school. Our long-term goal is to be an A school. Last year we made some gains even during a challenging year. We owe a portion of our success to the Hillsborough Education Foundation grant that was approved last year to help fund our school store. As a school we would like to continue the momentum and gain the 50 points needed for our letter grade to go up. Our teachers use Mustang Money and the school store as incentive for academic and behavior achievement.
