Project Goal

Every student deserves the opportunity to feel comfortable, safe, and calm in school. The goal is to establish a sensory room with flexible seating to allow students to create a safe space with tools students can use to self-regulate and manage anger, over-stimulation and stress. 

 

How Project Benefits Students

Schools can be noisy, busy places. For some, the sheer volume of stimuli can all get too much, making the school environment a stressful and disturbing place at times. The creation of sensory rooms in school is a practical and effective way to provide calming and safe spaces for pupils with autism and other special educational needs. The goal is for students to use sensory room, then return to class calmly and ready to learn.  

 

Expected Outcome(s)

Most of our students were eLearning last school year, and to limit and assist with the transition to being back on campus this school year a sensory room can help. The use of sensory equipment can help students to develop and practice a range of skills including hand-eye coordination fine and gross motor skills, communication, sensory skills.
Dealing with behavioral issues can be a challenge, but sensory rooms in schools are an effective and chilled-out way to work with children on regulating their behavior. The calming environment allows students to work through any difficult emotion in a safe and supportive space, together with a member of staff. Handling behavioral issues in this way improves focus in the classroom, which has a knock-on effect on the rest of the school population. In this way, sensory rooms in schools are beneficial for everyone.
