Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

My students range in age from six to eleven years old. Approximately 68% of my students are African American, 5% white, and 27% Hispanic. These students are economically disadvantaged and some of them have never owned a book. Most of my students don't have technology in their homes. My job is not only to teach the students how to read, but also to empower them to become lifelong readers and thinkers.

Project Goal

My students range in age from six to eleven years old. Approximately 68% of my students are African American, 5% white, and 27% Hispanic. These students are economically disadvantaged and some of them have never owned a book. Most of my students don't have technology in their homes. My job is not only to teach the students how to read, but also to empower them to become lifelong readers and thinkers.

How Project Benefits Students

Teaching diversity and social justice is important for our young learners. These books are culturally relevant and will make a difference in our students' learning because they represent our school's diversity. The titles and messages of these books will encourage needed discussion on topics of social justice and reinforce social and emotional learning skills we teach daily.

Expected Outcome(s)

My project will entice students to read more within in the school. Having a fantastic selection of literature, that they see themselves represented in, is crucial for their development in reading. Many of the books that my students get in their hands are irrelevant to their life and do not represent the experiences that they live daily. The books I have selected are not only wonderful books that have won multiple awards, they also are stories about the culture of my students. This will allow my scholars to relate to the text which ultimately helps to drive the reading process and allow them to find a love for reading.
