Project Goal

Fund Accelerated Reader program for the 2020-2021 school year, for our Title 1 school with 84.4% disadvantaged or sometimes called "free school lunch" rate.

How Project Benefits Students

Our Accelerated Reader Program has Multiple Benefits: increases student engagement in reading; encourages independent reading; improves comprehension; reading tied to goal-setting; fosters conversation about books and authors; increases the amount of time students read independently at school and at home.

This program is different from all other reading programs in that the students get to choose books that appeal to them. They choose their goal point level with their teacher, they are encouraged to take quizzes specific to each selection and self-monitor to reach a specific deadline. When their goal is met by the deadline, they gain entry to an AR Party, which is budgeted at 67 cents per child.
The party benefits the children by reinforcing the behavior of reading+goal setting/tracking=reward.

Expected Outcome(s)

The expected outcome is to increase reading proficiency with our 380 Title 1 school children, with a focus on bottom quartile students, including our ELL students, ESE and VE students. Instruction is provided in-room via computers, with teachers conducting individual reading conferences to build life long readers.

We expect to see students’ reading achievement increase by gaining points on FSA in grades 4-5. We also expect students to make one year’s growth in reading levels by collecting pre and post data from teachers. We also would like to see the percentage of students who meet their AR goal quarterly increase from 30% to 45%. Our bottom quartile will make gains in ELA; students will foster a love for reading and explore multiple genres. Equally important, students will gain skills in goal-setting and setting a plan for achieving their goal.

Detailed Cost Summary
