Project Goal

The goal of "SELebrating Student Wellness!" is to provide our classrooms with kits that integrate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies to create caring learning communities. As a school site, we have refined our school culture to include a focus on SEL that supports our content instruction. Through community partnership and professional development, we have been able to positively impact interpersonal relationships amongst our students and staff. This project will help our site continue to make progress and present more options for our students as we examine critical components of knowledge acquisition such as Educational Equity and Restorative Practices.  

 

How Project Benefits Students

The primary way in which this project benefits our learning community is through providing tangible items our students can utilize to develop their Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. Each requested item will be incorporated into classroom "Mindfulness Kits" each teacher will place in his/her "Peace Corner" or "Reflection Area." Our students will be able to visit these identified sections of the classroom as needed to self-regulate and self-manage their emotions. This project will be implemented throughout the entire academic year. As teachers professionally grow in learning more about SEL and Mental Health, the kits will be a transformative tool in the classroom that will be integrated into their weekly "Community Building Sessions" and conversations with students. Our students will also benefit by having the ability to assume leadership roles within the classroom by serving as models of using their emotional intelligence to navigate the instructional day. 

 

Expected Outcome(s)

(1) Broward Elementary students will have daily access to tools that foster the acquisition and development of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills.

(2) Broward Elementary students will cultivate a sense of empathy for others and an understanding of the five core competencies of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as defined by the Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning (CASEL).

(3) Broward teachers will observe a positive return on instructional investment through the inclusion of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) practices embedded within each learning environment.

(4) Broward Elementary students will experience a continuation of SEL development as these kits will be utilized in all grade levels and across all content areas during their elementary experiences within our site.
