Project Goal

My goal is for 4th grade students to have the materials necessary to investigate renewable energy sources. 

 

How Project Benefits Students

I am requesting renewable energy materials so that the students can have engaging, hands-on opportunities to investigate how solar energy, wind energy, and hydropower can generate electricity. I am requesting 3 Didax Renewable Energy Kits for students to have a hands-on exploration of solar, wind, and water power with 4 interchangeable monitors and 3 interchangeable power heads, 15 United Scientific Basic Solar Kits so that students can work in small groups to demonstrate the conversion of solar energy to electric power, 3 Learning Resources Solar Lanterns so that students can observe how the small solar panels on the lantern collect energy from the Sun and store it in batteries to power the lights, and 3 United Scientific Solar Powered Cars so that students can investigate how solar energy can be transformed into energy of motion. This directly relates to the Science Next Generation Sunshine State Standards SC.4.P.10.4- Describe how moving water and air are sources of energy and can be used to move things., SC.4.E.6.3-Recognize that humans need resources on Earth and that these are either renewable or nonrenewable., and SC.4.E.6.6-Identify resources available in Florida (water, phosphate, oil, limestone, silicon, wind, and solar energy). Our 4th grade students will be able to use these materials this year as they learn about the above standards and our 5th grade students will be able to use these models as they review these standards to prepare for the 5th Grade Statewide Science Assessment. These materials will also be used in future years with many students to come. 

 

Expected Outcome(s)

I anticipate that after exploring renewable energy using these materials, the 4th grade students will be proficient at the standards SC.4.P.10.4, SC.4.E.6.3, and SC.4.E.6.6 as evidenced by their mini assessment scores. I anticipate that 5th grade student proficiency on the same standards will increase as evidenced by their science baseline assessment scores and science midyear assessment scores.

All of the resources that I am requesting can be purchased from www.schoolspeciality.com
The Didax Renewable Energy Kits are $194.17 each and I am requesting 3 kits for a total cost of $582.51.
The United Scientific Basic Solar Kits are $12.67 each and I am requesting 15 for a total cost of $190.05.
The Learning Resources Solar Lanterns are $29.99 each and I am requesting 3 for a total cost of $89.97.
The United Scientific Solar Powered Cars are $24.59 each and I am requesting 3 for a total cost of $73.77.
The total cost of all materials that I am requesting is $936.30.
