Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Amgen Foundation - $250.00
The goal of this project is to provide vegetable and herb plants for my two blocks of students (25 in each) to plant in the raised gardens at our school. Other classes are encouraged to visit the garden to make observation/inferences, check on progress.
Through gardening there are many science objectives that will be inclusive of their involvement with gardening. The standards cover 3rd, 4th and 5th grade as the students will be assessed at the end of the year over those concepts. The 3rd grade standard is SC.L.14.1 Describe structures in plants and their role in food production, support, water, nutrient transport and reproduction. The 4th grade standard is SC.4.N.1.6 Recognize the difference between observations and inferences. The 5th grade standard is SC.5.L.17.1 Describe how when the environment changes, some plants survive and reproduce while others die . The students will be pre-assessed on these standards and well as post tested. I will also include pre/post info regarding the exposure experience to new foods as welll.
Taking the classroom outdoors to connect the science curriculum will benefit the students in several ways. First, just being outside and not in a closed classroom, the students can distance themselves while still being an active learner. The students will be responsible for caring for the garden (weeding, watering , harvesting). The standards of plant parts (3rd grade), observations/inference (4th), environmental changes (5th) are some of the focusing that incorporate the garden. Having a local working farm share during Great American Teach In (virtually).
*Being responsible & working together to for the care of the garden
*emphasizing the benefits of healthy food choices
*exposing students to new foods (we will make salsas, stuffed peppers, kale chips)
*share home/school connections with the garden
**I was a part of a fellowship at USF the past two years and was able to fund the garden through them. I am hopeful to keep our gardens sustainable through grants as it was very successful last year.
