Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Hillsborough Education Foundation - $2,000.00
Fostering cultural awareness across campus through literacy! Burnett Middle School students in grades 6-8 will examine racial bias through the lens of different fictional characters with varying racial backgrounds.
Students school-wide will read Ghost Boys simultaneously and examine the lives of two pre-teen characters whose lives are forever altered by one single incident. Historical context is beautifully woven in as students compare and contrast similar tragedies of decades-past and analyze current happenings. This novel study will also serve as supplemental reading intervention for the majority of our students whose ELA data shows as non-proficient in most LAFS standards assessed on the Spring 2021 FSA.
The expected outcome of this novel study of Ghost Boys is sure to be far-reaching as students across grade levels engage in discussions, the viewing of videos, and participation in lectures/visits from law enforcement and possibly a Civil Rights attorney to learn first-hand about the the nature of their work as it relates to topics in the novel.
The school-wide reading of this powerful novel lends itself to Burnett Middle School's cultural and instructional priorities for literacy with focus on building stronger readers and writers through the use of accelerated literacy instruction as well as promoting a climate of diversity and acceptance.
I'm requesting $2,751.00 total to cover the cost of 700 Ghost Boys novels for each students. I understand that the limit is $2,000, but we're hoping this project will be fully funded.
