I teach students who have not passed the FSA with a Level 3 or higher. Most of my students come to class and do not like reading. They would rather do anything else then read. One of the problems we see with test scores is the lack of vocabulary knowledge. We attack vocabulary in isolation as well as in context of a text. I think the students would enjoy playing games to enhance their vocabulary. Expanding vocabulary is key to create life long readers and support their comprehension.
The project will benefit students this year as well as many years to come. It will provide them an activity to enhance their vocabulary in an engaging way. Learning vocabulary can be boring, so I am looking for ways to make it fun. Playing games would entice them to learn new vocabulary. I pan to utilize the games twice a month. This will break up our curriculum and engage them in another way. It also supports the idea that reading is everywhere in life, even when playing a game. Reading is important in the real world not just in school. This grant will support our reading standard that focuses on vocabulary.
As we look at data, the goal for my 125 students is to move up a level on FSA. This is measured by their FSA scores at the end of the year. So students who scored a Level 1 in 6th grade, we want to see them move up to a Level 2 in 7th grade. If a student scored a level 2 in 6th Grade, we want them to move up to a Level 3 in the 7th grade. If a student score a level 3 then they passed the reading portion of the FSA.
