Project Goal

My goal is to be able to place literature with diverse characters in the hands of my students that have a strong focus on image positivity to help them build their self-esteem.

How Project Benefits Students

Working in a population where over 90% of the school would qualify for free or reduced lunch, I see many students are met with challenges that their peers in other communities have never even thought of. One of the biggest challenges I see is low self-esteem. This project will benefit my students within my 2 classes by building their self-esteem with literature that has characters that look like them. It will also benefit them by putting tangible books in their hands and in their homes to help them start to build their own home libraries.

Expected Outcome(s)

My expected outcome is that my proposal will help my students to build their self esteem and love of literature through characters that look like them and cause them to have a sense of pride about what their reading. My expectation is that this will be the spark that not only makes them want to read more but also causes them to walk with their heads held high. My goal is to build self-esteem through literature that is rich in image positivity through words and illustrations. I would like to have enough copies to give one to each one of my students in a hope to give them a sense of pride through ownership of their own copy and to help build their own home library.
