Project Goal

The goal is to increase literacy by ensuring every student has equal access to materials that can increase their depth of knowledge in Reading/Writing, sentence structure, grammar, and vocabulary.

How Project Benefits Students

Students who struggle in reading struggle in every other subject and the gaps do not lessen as they get older they become wider. Research has shown a direct correlation between students inability to read well and their entrance to the criminal justice system.

The students in my classrooms all receive free/reduced lunch, they come from homes where parents are working yet, they are struggling to provide the materials needed as well as the time to completely support their student's academic needs. These students are extremely hungry for depth of knowledge and I want to show them that there are people in the community who will step in and support their drive to learn.

Book availability is scarce and their exposure to fluent readers in limited. I want to develop a love of language through reading and teach students that through these avenues they can better appreciate and related to multifaceted groups more effectively.

We need the materials readily available to make this happen. Funding this project would open a whole new world of learning for these wonderful students.

Expected Outcome(s)

Students will increase their Overall Reading level by 2 grade levels this year.

Students will better understand how language works and use their skills to decode unfamiliar words

Students will know how to find root words, use context, and character interactions to know the theme and point of view of others in a story or an informational text

Students will develop a love of reading that will create the desire to continue learning for the rest of their lives.

Detailed Cost Summary

All the materials included would support 80 students and provide books that student can keep and read even after they leave 5th grade.

Students would have their own additional learning material that would no longer need to be copied and can remain as a resource for them forever.
