Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

Project Goal- The goal is to excite disadvantaged students who have extremely limited access to modern books that will inspire them. Our school has wonderful students who have far fewer books and resources to spark a love of learning than the great majority of our fellow American children. I have found that new, vivid, nonfiction books are especially appealing to our kids. The Geography and History section of our library needs to be updated. We intend to use these books across all of our grade levels for enjoyment and units of study. It is very telling when we pull books for Hispanic Heritage and Indigenous Peoples’ Day that we need to update our collection. Putting relevant texts that have updated text features and photographs will help the students meet the nonfiction standard categories: key ideas and details, craft and structure, and integration of ideas. We hope to have new and colorful books for our library which lags far behind most elementary libraries due to a lack of community resources. Publisher Mackin has completed a collection analysis of our current library collection which shows that our nonfiction Geography and History collection has an average age of 2006. The books are largely worn and tired and outdated. The recommended average age for our Geography and History collection is 2013. The report recommends that we boost our nonfiction to 41.5 percent of our collection from the current 30.8 percent. We would love to have our Geography and History books updated to give our students every opportunity to create a love of reading and learning.
