The goal is to specifically target Kindergarten Language Arts skills (Math and science content areas will also be positively impacted by these presentation strategies) by providing opportunities for kindergarten students to practice and excel in the new Florida B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) Language Arts Standards. This includes oral and written communication, handwriting, oral presentations, and use of multimedia. To accomplish this, students will need to present their work often to show their skill acquisition in these areas. A great way to encourage this public sharing is to provide opportunities for our young learners to share their work and learning to their classmates using a projector and Elmo (camera document) for ease of viewing and engaging in discussions.
My kindergarten class is comprised of English language learners, special needs students, and general education students. Every student needs to use academic language and show their understanding of the daily targeted skill being taught. When students show their classmates their work and describe what they did on their paper, classmates can learn from that student's sharing.
Students presenting their work have opportunities to get asked questions and to answer those questions. Classmates have opportunities to form questions about other's work and to analyze for themselves if the work shows the actual Learning target being taught. Confidence is developed as students have discussions about the work produced and shared. The presenter student gains confidence in communicating ideas about their work, and classmates can gain confidence by seeing how a piece of work was created and realizing "Oh I can do that too--or that is what I was thinking!"
Kindergarten students' speaking and discussion skills will improve and include the academic language/ vocabulary for the skill being taught. Student's formation of questions will include the question stems of a question (Who, what, where, when, why, and how) and not the typical statements our young learners provide when they think they are asking a question. Students will gain confidence in their skills to discuss their own work quality and justify their choices in what they did, and to question other's work -and to learn as well!
This is strategy of public sharing of work and explanation of work is also used in science and math content areas. All students are expected to grow and learn from where they currently are in their Language Arts journey- English acquisition, letter writing from word sounds, or sentence writing.
