The students will complete the structures of famous landmarks from around the world. Once the structures are built the students will research the location, create a map and and find out the history of the famous landmark ,symbolism and purpose of which it was built. A flight plan and cost will be created to plan their trip to visit the landmark they created and researched.
The fifth graders will present to their class mates and peers to share about the landmark , history and location of the landmark . The students will share the information and research and structures with peers in a Travel Expo, so others students are introduced to other places and landmarks that are to be visited and explored.
Our school has a 98% rate on a free and reduced meal plan. Most of our students have not been out of their own community or have very limited travel experiences. Exposing our students to landmarks and places will open windows and doors to other worlds and places. As they research and build an emphasis will be placed upon them actually being able to a visit these places that they are building and researching. The fifth graders will also be practicing and fulfilling the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) which combines three dimensions to form each Performance Expectation or Standard
1. Practices - this describe behaviors that scientists engage in as they investigate and build models and theories about the natural world and the key set of engineering practices that engineers use as they design and build models and systems.
2. Crosscutting Concepts - these have application across all domains of science and are a way of linking the different domains of science. They include: Patterns, similarity, and diversity; Cause and effect; Scale, proportion and quantity; Systems and system models; Energy and matter; Structure and function; Stability and change.
3. Disciplinary Core Ideas focus K–12- this explains the science curriculum, instruction and assessments on the most important aspects of science. Disciplinary ideas are grouped in four domains: the physical sciences; the life sciences; the earth and space sciences; and engineering, technology and applications of science
There are many outcomes expected within this one grant. Integrating the standards with hands on activities and research is one way to keep fifth graders engaged and excited about learning. Students will feel a sense of accomplishment finishing building the landmark. They will have real world connections to places they can go and landmarks that tell a story and have importance to different cultures.
The sharing of ideas and communicating is vital to retaining information and gaining confidence in oneself at this age.
These combined with practicing the Next Generation Science Standards make for a meaningful learning experience that can influence the students and expand their world.
My fifth grade students averaged a 46% on the Mid -Year Science Assessment. I would like for my student average to increase to 55% by May of this year on the End of Year Science Assessment.
I believe with the practice of science and the hands -on application and engagement will increase their knowledge and understanding which will result in a higher average.
The book will be read to start conversations and think about places to visit and why for students.
Each architect item comes complete with the skyline and specific monuments or structures. The items will be utilized over and over to give fifth grades and experience unique to their grade level.
