Students in high school often prepare their art portfolios for their life outside the school walls. The students have to have 10-15 pieces of art to show originality, creativity, and knowledge of technique and material. The goal of this grant is to have supplies to create 2D self-portraits with accurate proportions and learn the art of printing reusable designs. The students learn through standard VA.912.S.3.12 - Develop competence and dexterity, through practice, in the use of processes, tools, and techniques for various media. This grant provides the material to experiment with different media and show diversity in the portfolio.
My student population comes from diverse households and 67% are on free or reduced meals. If the supplies are not available at school, they do not always have the chance to experiment with different media at home. At school, we teach our students how to do one of the most ancient forms of printing - block printing. In class, they recreate this ancient art form and learn how to carve using linoleum carving tools, how to change the blade on the tools, and how to carve away from your body. The outcome is a timeless piece of art that the students can be proud to include in their art portfolio. Creating 2D designs in linoleum allows the student to demonstrate how they envision negative and positive space in their design. They learn how to do reverse design. They can enter art competitions that celebrate block printing or mix it with other mixed media. The self-portrait mirror helps our students with self-portraits and learn how to do accurate proportions in their 2D art. The end results will allow the student to show originality,
creativity and knowledge of techniques and materials in their portfolio.
The expected outcome for our students is to have a diverse art portfolio that showcases students' artwork and turns their vision into creations.
