The goal of this project is to acquire a meeting carpet for my first graders that allows them each to have a designated space for themselves and help them to recognize the boundaries of another's personal space.
I spend a great deal of instructional time teaching and building character development throughout the school year to my first grade students. This begins on day one and continues to the very last day of the school year. Much of the time spent during read-alouds, morning meetings, and calendar time is on the classroom carpet. There are so many visual cues to having a carpet with individual spaces that can connect to character traits such as respect and citizenship. This carpet would be the permanent space in the classroom and implemented as soon as it arrives.
All 18 of my students would directly benefit from this request daily. The carpet is the main gathering area from the beginning of the year until the last day of the school year and provides so many opportunities to teach character development. It would remain in my classroom to enhance future learners as well.
