Extensive educational research has proven that manipulatives help students learn by allowing them to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning. Since science is an active discipline, manipulatives help facilitate the learning process by allowing the students to visualize scientific concepts that are invisible to the naked eye or too far out of reach to initially perceive. To view a diagram of the movement of the earth around the sun is one thing, but to have students physically engage with manipulatives that can show them how the earth both revolves and rotates around the sun helps takes their learning to a whole different level. In mathematics, manipulatives are designed so that a learner can perceive a particular mathematical concept by manipulating it. The use of manipulatives provides a way for children to learn concepts through developmentally appropriate hands-on experiences connected to grade-level content.
Dover Elementary school is a Title 1 school in the Hillsborough County Transformation Network. 92% of the students are Hispanic and 98% live at poverty level. Most of these students do not have basic resources such as internet, home computers, or access to a variety of educational resources. Many parents and family members speak only their native language and often there is little education content related discourse with their children.
In the 2022-2023 school year, Dover’s 4th grade will service approximately 100 students. These students will be split between two departmentalized math/science teachers. Resources provided by this grant will used by both teachers and all students, and will be safeguarded for use in the following years.
In addition to alignment with common core standards for each discipline, these manipulatives improve students’ sense of spatial awareness. Through manipulative use students learn how things fit together, increase their problem-solving skills, and encourage their creativity.
These hands-on experiences will enhance student growth and development, making connections across disciplines in science, math, and literature. Use of manipulatives generates increased excitement among the students which in turn increases their academic discourse. This excitement can carry over to the home environment to be shared with loved ones, supporting increased family discourse and the use of academic vocabulary outside of the classroom.
