Project Goal

Increase engagement in reading by providing 4th grade Reading classrooms with books at a variety of reading levels that have characters that "look like" the students and that reflect the students' life experiences.

Increase student engagement in reading by providing them with high interest nonfiction and fiction reading materials in the form of Storyworks Magazine from Scholastic.

How Project Benefits Students

If you want to improve your skills (athletic, musical, vocational) what is the best way to do it? Most people will say, "Practice!"

Reading is the same. Foundational skills are crucial, but they must be taught within the context of reading a variety of meaningful texts. In other words, Practice Makes Perfect!

Dover Elementary is a Title One (high poverty) school in which 92% of the students identify as Hispanic and historically 16-18% are migrant. 37% scored at a "proficient" level as third graders according to the FSA Test conducted in the Spring of 2022.

By providing the fourth grade Reading classrooms with books written by Hispanic authors and featuring characters that look like our students and have had similar life experiences, the fourth graders will be more likely to read often and get more practice with stories that have more meaning to them personally. (Mirror, Mirror in My Books...)

The "Storyworks" magazine by Scholastic will provide students with their own copies of text that they can annotate, highlight, and ultimately take home to enjoy and share with their families. Many of our students come from Spanish speaking homes. Often times the students are the only English speakers. What a great way to share their bilingual skills with the family!

Every Storyworks magazine has nonfiction articles, a fiction piece, a poem, reader's theater, an infographic, and a fun vocabulary building section called "Adventures of the Word Nerd" that challenges the students' skills in an entertaining way. There are also contests in each magazine that the students can enter.

These magazines are provided in a digital and print formats and also have teacher resources to be used as an instructional focus in the classroom.

Expected Outcome(s)

As engagement increases reading levels will increase leading to a greater percentage of students reading at or above grade level by the end of the year.

We are particularly interested in seeing the students who have historically scored in the bottom range compared to the other students show tremendous growth.

Approximately 120 students will benefit from every aspect of this grant for the 2022-2023 school year. Many more will benefit from the additional books to the classroom libraries as these will remain at Dover Elementary as long as they are in good condition.

Detailed Cost Summary

Item one includes the cost of a one-year subscription to the Storyworks magazine for 120 students and shipping. Six issues are delivered between August and May in addition to the digital access for each student.

3 copies of each book are reflected in the order for items 2-16 so that each Reading Teacher will have a copy for his/her classroom library. Shipping is not included as there is no shipping cost for this particular order.
