Project Goal

As a new teacher at Dover Elementary, a Title I (high poverty -, underperforming) school, my goal is to fill my 4th grade empty classroom library with a wide range of grade level books that reach ALL my readers! With many of my students being English Language learners, connecting with authors that write stories they can relate to is essential to increase their engagement!  

 

How Project Benefits Students

There is no question that students need an exciting library to inspire and motivate them to read! Having a wide range of genres, authors and relatable topics to choose from, will allow students the opportunity to use literary texts throughout their learning journey as a reader. Furthermore, having a library filled with a wide range of books, will give ALL students the resources they deserve to excel, and one day become future leaders! My classroom will consist of both below grade level readers and gifted and talented learners. Also, the majority of my students will be of Hispanic heritage and having books with characters like them and authors with a "voice" similar to theirs, will increase engagement and interest. 

 

Expected Outcome(s)

1. Our classroom library will allow English language learners to connect with texts that are relatable and culturally relevant.
2. Our classroom library will provide high interest books that appeal to both reluctant readers and accelerated learners alike.
3. The increase in reading opportunities will impact the acquisition of language and reading skills, providing motivation to excel.
4. Our library will provide mentor texts that can be used to demonstrate exemplary writing during a lesson, inspiring students to apply similar techniques to their own writing pieces.
5. All students will move up at least one number level (Levels range from 1-5) by January in their reading assessments. With the end of year goal being that all students are at grade level, or above grade level by May 2023. 

 

Detailed Cost Summary

The prices were based on two vendors, Amazon (for the books) and Really Good Stuff (for the book bins). I am hoping to get most books in paperback as they are less expensive. Some of the books paperback prices were not listed on Amazon, as only hardcovers were available.
