Project Goal

The goal of this project is to create and implement individualized workstations and small group activities for students with developmental disabilities to encourage independence amongst all students while improving literacy and math skills.

How Project Benefits Students

This project will benefit students in elementary school with developmental disabilities in self-contained Exceptional Student Education classrooms. It will allow them to engage in literacy and math curriculum activities independently or in small groups and provide them with repetition of skills and the confidence they need to succeed.

Workstations are specific tasks that the students complete independently such as matching, sorting, fine motor activities, counting, etc. These workstations will be created at each child's level and connected to their individual education goals and objectives along with the current Florida Access Points curriculum standards. This project will also help them master basic reading and math skills such as letter and number recognition, phonics, and comprehension skills that will help them improve academically. It will provide the necessary materials to create individualized workstations along with enriching literacy and math games for small group activities.

Upon funding, the workstations will be created within one month by the teachers and used by the students throughout the remainder of the school year. The workstations will be updated during the year as necessary to continue to meet the learning goals of the students. The store-bought games will be implemented into the classroom routine immediately. In addition, these workstations and small group activities will continue to be used in upcoming school years, so that the same students in addition to future students will benefit from these activities in years to come.

Expected Outcome(s)

Many students with developmental disabilities require one-on-one assistance to complete academic tasks, and the goal of this project is to improve literacy and math skills while encouraging independence and engagement in the classroom. Currently, there are four teachers and approximately 40 students who will benefit from this project. The number of teachers and students will be about the same amount in upcoming school years, as well.

Data will be collected on a monthly basis to assess the growth and progress of the literacy and math skills of these students while using these workstations and activities.

Detailed Cost Summary

Most of this project relies on literacy and math games and activities that are store-bought and ready for immediate use ($1,144.89). These will be purchased from Lakeshore Learning or Amazon to get the best price. However, many of the independent tasks will be teacher-created and require various materials and storage containers ($169.94). These materials and containers will be mostly purchased at Amazon and Dollar Tree to get the best price.
