Project Goal

To engage students in real world problem solving skills using technology.

How Project Benefits Students

Our world is becoming more and more different than the world we know and many careers my students will have in the next 20 years have not been created yet.

This is where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) becomes so valuable. Giving my students a chance to gain more problem solving skills using STEM practices weekly in our classroom is paramount to giving them skills for careers we can only try to predict.

They will have to learn that their first try isn't always the best try and sometimes it takes many, many attempts and plans to correctly execute what you want. This is a skill a lot of students are not acquainted with and struggle to grasp.

Using the Coding Critters and Code & Go Robot Mice over the course of the year allows us to try many different challenges with the same tools. Students can learn how to code their critters for basic goals: to follow a path or push objects into a desired area. They may code for even more complicated goals such as maneuvering a maze. The options are nearly endless. They can literally create their own code that can then be transferred to a computer program that our district already has access to and one that I have been just aching to work with.

Expected Outcome(s)

I expect my students to gain a mindset that giving up is not the best option, that continuing to problem solve can be very rewarding to them.

I expect my students to gain confidence in solving their own problems and not expecting someone else to just do the work for them.

I expect my students to improve their cooperative working skills since they will be doing a lot of these activities in pairs or groups and the work needs to shared and owned equally.

I expect my students to gain more background in the world of technology besides just watching or performing on a computer program and specifically coding which will give them more skills for the future.
