Creating a calm down corner in the ESE classroom is a crucial part of my students’ daily life. ESE students need frequent breaks and can have many meltdowns. This place will allow students to take a break and have a chance to refocus and regulate their emotions. It will also allow the entire class to continue academic instructions without disruption. Overall this will allow all students to get more learning time and benefit from having undisturbed class time.
This project will benefit my ESE students (K-5) by providing them a safe place where students can practice calming strategies and improve self-regulation in a healthy way. Special needs students require anti-toxic and safe items to use during their meltdowns. For example, the fidget and sensory toys allow the students to grasp, play, explore and relax. Anxiety relief items will divert students attention away from their negative emotions, so they can have a chance to calm down and refocus. All of the items that will be put in the calm down corner have a significant purpose to promote emotion regulation. The corner is made to be a separate setting for the students to be able to detach themselves and deescalate their emotions. The corner will have a wide variety of items and strategies that the students can use as they need.
Our expected outcome is that ESE students will learn how to use the calming corner effectively. They will have a variety of tools, toys, visuals and techniques to choose from. Students will be able to learn different strategies and ways to choose what works well for them. The classroom will be disrupted less and will result in a calmer learning environment for all students.
Calm down corners are developed and promoted in a variety of ways in the school settings. Items like multi-color carpet with number counting, fidget toys, therapy balls, sensory games and items, texture calming stickers, educational feeing posters, sensory pillow, relaxing ceiling light, beanbag, sensory drawing pads will make the calm down corner a perfect safe place for ESE students to go to when needed. The items will cost $639.86
