Project Goal

My goal is to create a garden to provide indoor and outdoor hands-on science experience to investigate life science and nature of science standards for students in third grade.

How Project Benefits Students

Growing a garden from a seed in the green house to harvesting vegetables will benefit students academically and social emotionally. All the third grade Life Science NGSS can be directly connected to a garden. Many of these standards focus on the changes living things go through which students will be able to observe daily. Students will also be able to investigate the causes behind the changes and infer solutions. The garden will provide access for students to see the effects of seasonal changes on plants SC.3.L.17.1(Describe how animals and plants respond to changing seasons), how different plants produce their own food, the different parts of the plant and their function SC.3.L14.1 (Describe structures in plants and their roles in food production, support, water and nutrient transport, and reproduction).
Social Emotionally the garden will provide opportunities for our students to engage with peers in collaborative discussion. Students will be a part of the garden process every step of the way. This is anticipated to help with responsibility, ownership, and leadership growth in our third-grade students. Academically, the Nature of Science NGSS can be directly connected to engaging in investigating and discussing explanations with peer scientist, SC.3.N1.1 (Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them individually and in teams through free exploration and systematic investigations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations) SC. 3. N1.5 (Recognize that scientist’s question, discuss, and check each other's evidence and explanations.)
To run a successful garden, students will constantly infer what is happening to their plants, based on observations, data, and discussion with peer scientist. This directly connects to the Level 3: Strategic Thinking and Complex Reasoning standard SC.3N1.6 (Infer based on Observation in a hands-on engaging way).
Rocks are requested for this project, they will be painted by students and families as labels for plants, and motivational notes from parents. The books will be used as classroom library books, which students can bring home to share reading with their family and discussion of what is happening in the school garden.
The school community will also be invited to use the garden as it fits in their curriculum.

Expected Outcome(s)

Engage students in STEM thinking.
Engage families in our school community.
Students will show proficiency on Life Science and Nature of Science standards on the end of the year Summative Science Assessment.
Students will retain the hands-on knowledge, and critical thinking skills to increase proficiency scores on the 5th Grade Science State Standard assessment.
