Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

The goal of this project is to increase reading fluency and comprehension with 1st grade students. Student achievement will be increased by placing more books into students' hands and giving them opportunities to listen to read aloud stories. Students will be able to choose and take books home to read. This will encourage continued learning through their favorite genres of text. For ELL students and struggling readers, additional opportunities to listen to a story previously read in class or their favorite story will be accessible through a listening station. This project will increase their eagerness to become better readers and give students access to literacy resources that will peak their interests.

How Project Benefits Students

Students will benefit from this project because they will be able to take books home to practice reading skills throughout the school year. Each week students will be able to choose their own books to take home. By having choices on what to read, students are more likely to practice reading at home, on the bus, or with a friend. When presented with a variety of book choices, students will gain background knowledge on various topics that will lead to an increase in reading fluency and comprehension. This project will greatly help students that do not have access to books at home. At the end of the year, students will be able to keep a few books of their choice as an incentive for becoming great readers.

Expected Outcome(s)

18 to 20 students will benefit from this project. This project offers students a listening station, personal book baggie, and take-home books to increase their vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
