The goal of this project is to have a common meeting space for my first graders in which they will each have their own designated, individual space. This common meeting space should promote a positive classroom environment, and allow students to acquire social-emotional skills while respecting each other's personal space.
Character development plays a large role in my classroom - within character development comes social-emotional skills that take time to learn. Following the pandemic, and the lack of social learning for many, I've rediscovered the importance of spending time each day to teach these skills. Within this, the setting of my classroom must also promote this type of character development. In my class, we spend a frequent amount of time on the classroom carpet. The visual cues and reminders that come with having a classroom carpet with individual spaces for each student (in this case, the smiley faces) will serve as a reminder for students to respect each other's personal space. First graders are very concrete thinkers so instructional time will be better spent when each student has a visual/physical reminder of their assigned space. Character traits such as respect and attentiveness will be promoted daily.
Components of the classroom environment are essential to effective learning outcomes, especially in regards to social-emotional learning. The cheerfulness this carpet encompasses will employ that same attitude in my students. My students would benefit from the spatial components of this carpet on a daily basis in terms of boundaries, character development, and attentiveness. This carpet will be implemented as soon as it arrives and be a focal point of my classroom as it will foster the hub of student learning.
