My goal is to help students with language impairments and communication difficulties increase their understanding of basic concepts, inferencing, and social skills in order to be effective communicators in the school setting. I work with students with language impairments and other disabilities through weekly therapy services. My students' difficulty with these important language areas impact their ability to communicate with peers and adults as well as access their curriculum.
Students with language impairments often exhibit decreased understanding of basic concepts. Basic concepts are words that depict location (i.e., up/down), number (i.e., more/less), descriptions (i.e., big/little), time (i.e., old/young), and feelings (i.e., happy/sad). A student’s understanding of basic concepts is important for school success as it is a skill needed for following directions and participating in reading activities, as well as needed for effective communication.
Inferencing is an important academic skill as students need to look at clues from text or pictures and, based on background knowledge, figure out what is happening through what may be implied but not directly stated (i.e., reading between the lines). Helping students understand when information is implied, or not directly stated, will improve their skill in drawing conclusions. Students need these skills for a variety of school subjects, including reading, science, and social studies.
Social skills are required for students to have positive relationships with others. The term “social skills” includes the child’s communication, problem-solving, decision-making, self-management and control, and relationships with classmates and friends. Difficulties with social behaviors may interfere with learning, teacher acceptance, and/or exclusion from school activities.
One way to target these skills is through the use of explicit instruction. These Chipper Chat kits provide task cards and stimuli as a hands-on way to target learning basic concepts, inferencing, and social skills. In addition to the specific task cards, the Chipper Chat activities provide a fun way to keep students engaged through the use of a magnetic wand and metal chips. Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus and promotes meaningful learning experiences. Students love these “magic” wands and are motivated to practice multiple repetitions to collect numerous chips with the wands.
Basic Concepts Chipper Chat is designed to help students learn and use basic concepts both receptively and expressively in five categories: Qualitative, Quantitative, Social-Emotional, Spatial, and Temporal. The Inferencing Chipper Chat kit targets the following skill areas, such as: Associations, Emotions, Figurative Language, Jobs/Occupations, Part to Whole, Prediction, and Setting/Location. Social Skills Chipper Chat helps students discuss and understand appropriate ways of dealing with numerous social situations.
These Chipper Chat kits will provide engaging and hands on learning opportunities to increase students’ language and communication skills for multiple students and for years to come! These highly engaging kits allow a caseload of 100 speech and language impaired students to make significant progress toward their communication goals as documented on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
