The goal of this project is to create meaningful connections between engaging videos/songs and grade level vocabulary. The tunes will stick with students to recall important content.
In addition, a hands on ROCK, mineral, crystal, gem mining activity will create excitement about Earth Science and provide lasting memories.
I will use the FLOCABULARY (year subscription) to engage my 90 students throughout each science unit. FLOCABULARY is an on line site that includes catchy animated song videos jam packed with grade required vocabulary. Students will also be able to access this site at home to complete activities and games to connect with the vocabulary lessons.
4th grade Earth Science includes the study of rocks and minerals. I am requesting kits of ROCKS, crystals and gem stones for our study. Students will get to mine and uncover treasures to observe, identify and collect data on. After studying them, best of all, they will get to take some home to keep! This will be the start of their love of rock collecting!
90 plus students, (from 4 different classes), will get set on fire with the passion of science! The Flocabulary songs will build student's vocabulary, which in turn will improve their content knowledge. When test scores rise, so will their confidence in science! The rock mining activity and investigations will spark their interest in the world around them to see that science is right under their feet. My expected outcome will be to keep these children interested and curious about the many treasures our world has to offer. These will be our future scientists, engineers and inventors! We need to invest in them now.
