The goal of this project is to engage students in hands-on exploration of math and science skills such as measurement, making predictions, making hypothesis, designing experiments, speed, fore, motion, data collection and more. Students will show a greater understanding of Science Tools and how to use them. Pitsco Education provides fun and engaging resources for learning in Science and Math. Our school would benefit from having materials to use Straw Rocket Launchers and Toolbox Racers in the classroom. These tools will allow students hands on experiences to create greater connections to and deeper understanding of the content taught.
Students will have recurring opportunities to work hands on with Mini Straw Rocket Launchers, full-sized Straw Rocket Launchers and Toolbox Racers. These tools are fun and engaging for all age groups. These materials can be used at the beginning of each school year as we focus on science process skills, the scientific method, and building our classroom math communities. The materials can be used again within the classrooms as students study force, motion, speed, velocity, data collection, and graphing. Throughout the year, these materials can be utilized in creative ways to review material learned – in all subject areas. Answer choices can be set up and students can set up their rocket launchers or toolbox racers to show their answer choice. Giving students multiple opportunities to use these tools will provide engagement in learning which helps students to retain information and connect experiences to their learning. Not only can these materials be used multiple times throughout this school year, but they can be used year after year.
Students will have engaging experiences using the scientific method and discussing multiple math and science concepts. The tools provided by this grant will also be available for ELA teachers to use in engaging formative assessment activities. As a result of these tools, students will have hands-on experiences to draw from when discussing these concepts and will be able to connect to these experiences when they encounter questions related to the concepts studied. These tools will be reused from year to year. This year, Lowry has almost 700 students in K-5. All grade levels can make use of the toolbox racers and straw rocket launchers this year and for years to come.
