Find It Fund It Florida - Hillsborough Education Foundation

I would like to create a room for teachers and staff to go and feel calm. A dedicated space for teacher wellness and rejuvenation would help improve morale as well as feelings of positivity towards work. I would love for the room for teachers and staff to have details such as inspirational messaging, an essential oil diffuser, foot massager, salt lamps and a calming water feature.

Project Goal

I would like to create a room for teachers and staff to go and feel calm. A dedicated space for teacher wellness and rejuvenation would help improve morale as well as feelings of positivity towards work. I would love for the room for teachers and staff to have details such as inspirational messaging, an essential oil diffuser, foot massager, salt lamps and a calming water feature.

How Project Benefits Students

Teaching the last 3 years has been a mental and physical struggle. Our teachers are heroes and come to work to serve kids every day. I would love to be able to provide them a space where they can go during their conference period or lunch to feel at home.

Teacher burn out is at an all time high. This room could help regulate EQ and self care in the work place.

This project will benefit students because a happy and healthy teacher will lend to an educator who has practiced self-care during the day. If a teacher takes care of themselves, they can model that same level of self-care to their own students.

Some data to support this project:
- teachers experience as much stress as paramedics and police officers (Johnson, Cooper, Cartwright, Donald, Taylor & Millet, 2005).

- students are negatively affected by teacher stress and burn-out (Arens & Morin, 2016)

- the chronic use of empathy and depletion of emotional resources are strongly associated with emotional exhaustion and/or professional burnout for teachers (Maslach, Schaufeli & Leiter, 2001).

One way that teachers can deal with occupational stress is by practicing self-care. The definition that I like to use from Newell & MacNeil (2016):

Expected Outcome(s)

Expected outcomes:
-well-equipped staff and teacher lounges can help decrease stress levels among faculty and staff.
- an increased sense of physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing at work.
- improves morale among school staff
- a dedicated space shows teachers they are valued and they will feel that way while utilizing the space.
