Project Goal

The goal of this project is to allow students to actively explore the physical properties of different rocks and minerals which supports our 4th grade Earth Science standard. My goal is to provide all of the fourth graders at our school a memorable experience where learning is fun and engaging!

How Project Benefits Students

The Diamond Del’s Gem Mining in-school field trip will provide virtual lessons that support our students with observing, identifying, and describing the properties of various rocks and minerals. On the day of the event, students will enter a "cave" set up with mining kits so that each student can interactively classify and explore the unique features of each gem they find in their individual kits. The students will be able to keep their treasures to share their experience with family and friends for years to come. The in-school field trip will culminate our Rocks and Minerals unit enhancing the content learned for the fourth grade standard.

Expected Outcome(s)

The expected outcome for the in-school field trip is for students to experience hands on observation, identification, and classification of various types of rocks and minerals in order to support content knowledge for Earth Science. We want to encourage them to think differently about the gems they find daily at their homes, the park, or other places they visit.

Our fourth grade students will be able to see rocks and minerals with a scientific approach as they find new ones out in nature!
