Project Goal

To promote the love of reading by building home libraries for underserved students living in poverty.

How Project Benefits Students

Thompson Elementary School is a transformation/Title 1 school that serves 730+ students of which 83% qualify for free/reduced lunch.

Underserved and vulnerable children living in poverty who lack ongoing access to a rich selection of books spend far less time reading, resulting in lower reading proficiency. Poor readers then struggle to complete high school and prepare for the world beyond.

Unfortunately, many children in low-income neighborhoods lack access to the quality books they need to become competent readers. There is no replacement for beloved books that a child can return to over and over to reinforce reading outside the classroom.

Expected Outcome(s)

This grant will allow us to purchase books to help students and families build home libraries – filling them with books the children choose themselves and therefore improving literacy.
