Project Goal

I would like to take my students to the Chihuly Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida to experience the glass art and Morean Glass Studio glass blowing demonstration. How Project Benefits Students

The Morean Arts Center website states that "The sharing of human expression through the arts builds a unified community." My gifted and talented students would benefit from having this shared cultural experience, which is both beautiful and inspiring. According to the Dana Consortium Report on arts and cognition, the arts enrich our lives and sharpen our creative skills. In fact, research connects involvement in the arts with increased achievement. Specifically, access to arts education benefits at risk youth , such as my students who come from disadvantaged households.

Creativity and innovation are valuable in the work force so it is important to develop students who are able to think outside the box and problem solve. I am teaching my students that they are unique and have something special to offer this world. Teaching about art helps students to develop confidence and tolerance. Children enjoy visual learning, and teaching about art can expand students' interests beyond the digital platform that many of our kids are so absorbed in today.

Expected Outcome(s)

The objectives of the trip are to teach students about a creative life and the artistic medium of sculpture including glass and environmental art. In addition, students will learn about glass blowing and the science behind it. Goal 2 of the gifted frameworks put forth by the State of Florida relates that students will create questions that drive factual exploration. I believe my students will be curious about how glass is made. The gifted frameworks also reference creative methodology and state that students will recognize contributors and innovators in multiple fields of accomplishment (goal 4 ) and identify characteristics that lead to success (goal 5).

Opening students' eyes to the world of art broadens their horizons and expands their thinking about the world and all the possibilities. My students, many who are economically disadvantaged and come from Spanish speaking homes do not often have the opportunity to go beyond the boundaries of their own small town of Plant City, so this experience would be life changing for them.
