Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
Hillsborough Education Foundation - $1,507.00
Do you want to be challenged with clues? Are you figuring out a crime, a puzzle or yourself? If you think you are good at figuring out a good mystery then the media center is a place for you! The goal of these books is not only to read through plot twists and solve puzzles but also analyze the interaction between character development, setting, and plot in a literary text - standard ELA.8.R.1.1. These books open clues into the mystery of our emotions, events of the past and how to solve puzzles in the future. The students can explore a career in forensic science and understand literary texts at the same time.
The media center is a place for learning development. Our hero crime solvers come to select books for decompression and stress relief. Our teachers come to supplement lesson plans and invoke interest in topics related to the Florida sunshine state standards. The media center focuses on all the students in the school, their reading level along with interest.
Nostalgic mystery books such as Nancy Drew are now high interest graphic novels. Books that have been made into TV Series such as Lemony Snicket’s books and Enola Holmes are available to curious readers. The students can get lost in a book and understanding the struggles the characters go through can make it a little easier to deal with struggles in their own life.
Crime scene investigation series and cryptology introduce the students to the history and techniques to solve a complicated scene. History is revisited as the story of how the Navajo language helped during World War II.
Our teachers come to find great texts and books to share with their students as they work on a unit such as the thematic 8th grade unit “Everyone loves a mystery: what attracts us to the mysterious?”
As a media specialist I work with our students and teachers to evaluate if we have the right collections available in the media center through checkout statistics. The books requested in this grant span various different sections in the library but cohesively create a great collection of LEX and formats to support the standard ELA.8.R.1.1.
